Chelsea stunned as 'progress' on CONTROVERSIAL transfer made
Olympique de Marseille are keen on signing Malick Fofana from arch-rivals Olympique Lyon, according to French media.
The Belgium international has made plenty of headlines this summer as a host of European clubs are chasing him after an encouraging season with Lyon. Fofana scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions.
The 20-year-old is one of Lyon's most valuable assets and, as such, is expected to be sold. The Ligue 1 giants are in the midst of a tumultuous summer and are likely to be in need of funds despite managing to stave off their forced demotion to Ligue 2.
Chelsea and Nottingham Forest are known to be keen on Fofana. In fact, the latter had already agreed a deal with Lyon to sign him, but the player stalled on greenlighting the move as he was holding out for approaches from Champions League clubs.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chelsea retain an interest in the youngster despite the arrivals of Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro, although the Blues have yet to make any concrete moves for Fofana.
Marseille 'rush towards' Fofana
Unless Chelsea decide to move quickly, they may miss out on the Belgian soon because a bombshell report from Foot Mercato claims that Marseille are making 'progress' in discussions with the player.
It is asserted that Marseille have 'positioned themselves' to make a move for the winger in what would be a hugely controversial move given the fierce rivalry between Lyon and Les Phoceens.
Marseille are scrambling to add a winger to Roberto de Zerbi's side and have already missed out on Noa Lang to Napoli. Feyenoord star Igor Paixao would be keen on moving to the South of France, but OM are unwilling to match the Dutch giants' €40 million asking price.
This has now seen them 'rush towards' Fofana, but it remains to be seen if Lyon would be willing to do business with their rivals. Last year, Jordan Veretout became the first player in almost a decade to transfer between the two clubs, and he only moved because he was forced out of Marseille.
