Alexander Isak makes €60m contract demand as Eddie Howe’s private thoughts revealed
Alexander Isak rocked the transfer market on Thursday when it was announced that he wants to explore the possibility of a move away from Newcastle United.
Although rumours had circulated around the Sweden striker for weeks, Newcastle’s insistence that he would not go anywhere suggested that no deal would be done this summer.
The revelation that he has handed in a transfer request, however, changes everything.
Liverpool are the team most closely associated with a move for Isak, despite having just landed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a €90 million deal. The Anfield club, though, have been free spending so far this summer, with more than €300m of business having been done.
Another possibility is a switch to the Saudi Pro League, where the 25-year-old could receive a life-changing salary.
According to Al-Riyadiya, Isak has requested more than €60 million a year to join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the big-spending division. Al-Hilal are the side seeking to sign him.
Despite the riches on offer in Saudi, the report indicates that Isak’s priority remains staying in Europe – even if the salary he receives is around half of what he might earn in the Gulf.
Newcastle were warned
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had tried to sound the alarm at St James’ Park before the Isak news went public, according to the Independent.
It is claimed that Howe told senior figures at the club that he was concerned about the striker’s situation much earlier this summer. Indeed, the report adds that this came even before Liverpool stepped up their interest in the player.
With three years left on Isak’s contract, though, Newcastle’s position remains untouched: they have no plans to sell the forward, who has reportedly rejected a contact offer worth €230,000 (£200,000) per week from the club. There have been no fresh negotiations since.
Newcastle’s stance would be “tested” by an offer worth €170m – a figure that would make Isak the third-most expensive player of all time.
