Arsenal and Liverpool are just two of the clubs eyeing a move for a striker who has been dubbed the ‘2 metre Messi’.

Stuttgart hitman Nick Woltemade has emerged as a potential target for the Premier League giants, according to Caught Offside. West Ham United, Brighton and Everton are also interested in the striker.

Coming off a campaign in which he scored 17 goals for the Bundesliga outfit, his stock is high and VfB are hopeful of a transfer fee of €50 million.

While he is thought to be a backup plan for the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, FootballTransfers has previously reported that the Gunners could sign two strikers this summer, putting them firmly in the frame to add the 23-year-old to their ranks.

"I think I can spot a good footballer quickly, and Nick caught my eye in the first week of training," Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor told ran. "Woltemade has the technique of Messi.

"The most important thing is that we involve Woltemade sufficiently in the game. He can do that as a deep-lying striker between the lines or as a true number 9 in the opponent's penalty area. We know what we have in Nick: He's a two-meter-tall Musiala or Messi."

His qualities were profoundly underlined as he scored a hat-trick for Germany U21 against Spain in March, netting three very different goals. The first was a deft finish after a clever dribble, the second was that of a penalty-box poacher and the third a powerful header.

What do the statistics show?

Woltemade took a relatively low number of shots from excellent positions in the Bundesliga this season, suggesting that he takes up good positions in the box and is capable of profiting from them. His strong xA figure points to strong and intelligent link-up play with his team-mates.

Data analytics firm SciSports compare him favourably in style to Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, who typically operates in a slightly deeper role than a traditional centre-forward. Woltemade is the same type of clever player as the World Cup winner.

Nick Woltemade: The expert opinion on a potentially ‘unstoppable’ force

Bundesliga journalist Ronan Murphy says that Woltemade could be a potentially excellent signing for Arsenal or Liverpool.

“Nick Woltemade is built like an old-school English targetman. Extremely tall, great at winning headers,” he tells FootballTransfers.

“From first impression, you would think he was going to be a traditional target man, but when you watch him, you are often amazed by how skilful he is with the ball at his feet.

He could be unstoppable
- German football expert Ronan Murphy

“Much more technical than most giants, Woltemade has excellent technique and dribbling ability and can beat opponents at will. He is very good at holding up play and bringing team-mates into attack, and can offer a different dimension up front for many teams.

“He still needs to work on his decision-making and his finishing, but if he can iron out these issues with his game, he could be unstoppable.”
