Manchester United have made an approach to Viktor Gyokeres to sound out a potential move, according to Sky Sports.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a reliable striker as both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to impress in the bygone season. Attacking output was one of Man Utd's biggest shortcomings in what was the club's worst-ever Premier League season.

Hojlund is being heavily linked with a return to Serie A, where Inter and Juventus are said to be keen on signing him. Man Utd will likely have to sell him before they can sign a top-level No.9 despite his insistence that he is going nowhere.

Due to having already brought in Matheus Cunha for €74 million, and with Bryan Mbeumo to follow suit for a similar fee, a striker signing will have to be funded by outgoings.

So far, precious little on that front has developed, although several players are leaving for free when their contracts expire on June 30. However, this has not stopped Man Utd from exploring a striker signing.

Man Utd open Gyokeres talks

According to Sky Sports, Man Utd have made contact with Sporting CP hitman Viktor Gyokeres through intermediaries. The approach was made to find out if a summer move is feasible from a financial and sporting point of view.

Ruben Amorim remains a huge fan of his former star striker, and the two have kept in touch following his Man Utd appointment. Gyokeres' agent previously revealed that the head coach was a decisive factor in the striker's decision to join Sporting in the first place.

Gyokeres is expected to cost €70 million this summer, and it was recently claimed that he would be open to joining Man Utd if they can muster the resources.

He was previously a top target for Arsenal, but the Gunners appear to be focusing heavily on Benjamin Sesko now. It is perhaps because of this that Gyokeres has softened his stance on a move to Man Utd.

We previously revealed that he is determined to play Champions League football next season, which is something that Man Utd can't offer. However, they are showing ambition in the market, and this may be enough to sway him.

Gyokeres is not the only striker being considered by Man Utd, but given his absurd scoring record, he should be a priority target for the Red Devils.
