The Reds are finally on the verge of securing their top summer target. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have 'verbally agreed' a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Wirtz.

The Anfield club will shell out a whopping €150 million, including add-ons, for the 22-year-old Germany international. After several weeks of negotiations, a breakthrough in the talks has finally been made.

Leverkusen have always insisted on their €150m asking price, and Liverpool appear to have finally caved after having several bids rejected. A first offer clocked in at just €100, a second worth €130m soon followed. Both were rebuffed by the Bundesliga side.

Naturally, Leverkusen would have preferred to keep their superstar, but in recent weeks and months, it has become increasingly clear that Wirtz would not extend his contract, thus paving the way for a summer transfer.

Liverpool agree Wirtz deal

With Liverpool now having an agreement in place with Leverkusen, the deal to sign Wirtz is expected to accelerate quickly as the player already agreed terms with the Premier League champions two weeks ago.

Wirtz has been eagerly waiting to receive the final green light from Leverkusen to fly out for his medical and complete his move. It remains to be seen how much of the €150m fee will be guaranteed and how much will be add-ons.

Should all bonuses be triggered, this deal will smash the overall British transfer record, which is currently held by Coutinho, who joined Barcelona from Liverpool for €135m in 2018. On the incoming front, Chelsea's €134m deal to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton currently tops the list.

Wirtz will eclipse both transactions, but despite this eye-watering outlay, Liverpool will feel that they have pulled off a real coup. The attacking midfielder has the potential to become the world's best player, and his transfer fee reflects that.
