Valentino Livramento was named Chelsea’s ‘Academy Player of the Year’ for the 2020-21 season, but the young Englishman never made a senior appearance for the Blues.

He appeared on the substitutes bench on a number of occasions, but the presence of fellow Cobham graduate Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta, who was club captain at the time, meant an opportunity to impress never arose.

Ultimately, Livramento followed Tariq Lamptey’s lead in leaving Stamford Bridge in search of regular first-team action.

He joined Southampton for just €5.75 million (£5m) in 2021, although Chelsea smartly included a sell-on clause in the deal that saw Livramento move to St Mary’s.

When Livramento joined the Saints, Chelsea included a clause that would see them earn 40% of any profit Southampton earned on the full-back.

As a result, Chelsea earned around €17m (£15m) when Livramento joined Newcastle United for €37.2m this summer.

Why did Chelsea sell Tino Livramento?

Chelsea had little say in Livramento joining Southampton as the English full-back wanted to leave in order to play regular Premier League football.

Given the presence of Azpilicueta, but most importantly James, there wasn’t a first-team pathway for Livramento and he opted to leave the club rather than fight what may have been a losing battle.

James’ persistent injury problems have made the decision to offload Livramento look rather foolish, although they finally signed a suitable back-up in January 2023, in the form of talented French right-back Malo Gusto. He joined Chelsea from Lyon for €30m.

Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori are two other Cobham academy graduates to leave Chelsea due to a lack of opportunities in recent years.

Tino Livramento at Newcastle

Livramento made his Newcastle debut against Manchester City in August, appearing off the bench for the final four minutes.

His first start came in a Carabao Cup win over City in September and he also started the 3-0 demolition of Manchester United in the same competition in November. Livramento provided a fantastic assist in that win.
