Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes Erik ten Hag should strip Bruno Fernandes of captaincy duties at Old Trafford after their 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

Goals from Erling Haaland (x2) and Phil Foden ensured a fifth Manchester derby win in the last six outings for Pep Guardiola’s men as pressure begins to mount on Ten Hag.

Keane formed part of Sky Sports’ pundit panel for the game and admitted that he thinks Fernandes should not be the captain of his former club.

The Portugal international was handed the captain’s armband during the summer, with Ten Hag making the decision to remove Harry Maguire from his post as Red Devils captain.

However, Keane does not believe that was the right thing to do.

What has Roy Keane said?

“The first thing I would do after today is take the captaincy off him [Fernandes],” Keane told Sky Sports. “One hundred per cent. I know it’s a big decision to change the captaincy but Fernandes is not captain material.

“I think he’s a talented player, no doubt about it, but what I saw today, he’s whingeing, he’s moaning, he’s throwing his arms up in the air constantly.

“It really isn’t acceptable. When you’re talking about where they make changes – board level, managers – I would start with that because the manager is capable of doing that. Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but he’s the opposite of what you want in a captain.”

The former Republic of Ireland international, who won seven Premier League titles during his career at Man Utd, also spoke about Ten Hag’s issues at Old Trafford.

“I think he still wouldn't have a clue what his best starting team is,” he said. “His head is spinning with the problems he's got at Man United.

“Where do you start, where do you finish? Defensively and physically they look all over the place. He'll have a sleepless night tonight.

“City weren’t at their best but they’re just toying with United now. They’re on different levels. I do feel for the United players. They’re just short in every aspect – technically, tactically, physically they’re so off it. It’s a long way back for this team.”
