Liverpool and Chelsea are ready to challenge Real Madrid for the signature of Kylian Mbappe, according to Italian media.

The PSG star is out of contract in the summer and despite recent claims that the French giants have given the 24-year-old a one-week ultimatum to decide his future, nothing has thus far materialised on that front. The perennial Ligue 1 champions are desperate for Mbappe to sign a new deal so that even in the event of a sale in 2024, they would at least not come away from the deal empty-handed.

With January inching ever closer, the fact that he has not yet put pen to paper on an extension is making rumours about his potential move to Real Madrid grow ever louder.

Indeed, these rumours have been fuelled by a Los Blancos board member who recently voiced his conviction that Mbappe will sign in 2024, the first such statement from a Real official since Florentino Perez told a fan in the summer that he will sign the Frenchman next year.

But what if Mbappe doesn't sign for Real Madrid? It seems unlikely, but a report claims that it is a distinct possibility.

Liverpool and Chelsea interested

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, you can't count out Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign the megastar. The Italian outlet goes so far as to assert that the two Premier League giants are readying 'extremely important contract offers.'

The financial power of the Premier League is crucial here. Despite Liverpool having to pull out of signing Jude Bellingham in the summer due to concerns over his price - with Madrid eventually landing him for €103 million - it is asserted that Los Blancos couldn't match the financial offers of their Premier League counterparts.

Chelsea were already linked with Mbappe in the summer, while Liverpool have been long-time admirers of the Frenchman. The Reds already tried to sign him during his Monaco days and his mother and agent Fayza Lamari is said to have a solid relationship with the Anfield club.
