Jamie Bynoe-Gittens recently emerged as a surprising Arsenal target, and his decision to extend his Borussia Dortmund contract amid the Gunners' interest is just as surprising.

The Black and Yellow have announced that the 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal until 2028 in what is seen as something of a shock move in Germany. A shock not because of Arsenal's interest, but because the youngster has barely featured for Dortmund this season.

Once billed as the heir to Jadon Sancho and erroneously described as the 'next Jude Bellingham' - even though the two are nothing alike - Bynoe-Gittens enjoyed a promising start to last season. A shoulder injury, however, disrupted his momentum and would continue to plague him for the rest of the campaign.

This term was supposed to be a fresh start, but things have not panned out that way. Despite Dortmund rarely looking convincing so far, the young winger has only made three appearances, one of them from the start against Wolfsburg, in which he was eventually taken off with a slight knock.

Contract extension

In light of his lack of minutes, rumours linking him to an exit weren't all that surprising, though that Arsenal were seen as a potential destination was a bit shocking. Now, those links can safely be laid to rest.

After the new deal was signed, BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: "Jamie is one for the future. He is a winger with enormous speed, who constantly seeks one-versus-one duels, who is able to get away from defenders with his technical ability, who can create chances for his teammates or get into scoring positions himself."

"We are convinced that his development is far from completed and are delighted that Jamie decided to commit his long-term future to BVB despite interest from several big European clubs."
