Indeed, Williams had thoroughly impressed in pre-season during Man Utd’s tour of the States. The club were weighing up options but ultimately decided that the best move for the defender was to go out on loan again.

Man Utd are in the midst of trying to clear some names off the books in a bid to ensure that they can bring in new arrivals. The club still want a right-sided centre-back and Ten Hag wants a No.9 for this season.

Man Utd want Toney

It comes after FootballTransfers’ exclusive story that the manager has pinpointed Ivan Toney as a possible arrival for the January window when extra funds should be available.

The striker is currently out of action following a ban for gambling breaches.

It is thought that the 27-year-old would be open to a move to Old Trafford, after an extremely successful period for Brentford in which he led them to the Premier League three years ago.

Rasmus Hojlund was brought in but the club, in particular the manager, are still hopeful of obtaining another forward to bolster their chances in the Premier League, as well as two domestic competitions, and the Champions League.

Toney moved to Brentford in 2020 for a fee thought to be around £10million. He helped them achieve Premier League status in 2021, and he’s gone on to score 68 goals in 128 competitions for the Bees.

In November 2022, it was revealed that Toney had been charged by the Football Association with an alleged 232 breaches of its gambling laws. He was banned from all football activity for eight months in May 2023.
