More Liverpool transfer targets are emerging after the Reds missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Jurgen Klopp has made no secret of the fact that he is after a defensive midfielder, while captain Virgil van Dijk called for a couple more additions to Liverpool’s squad following their 1-1 opening-day draw with Chelsea.

Ironically, it was the Blues who put the Reds in this awkward position in the first place. Liverpool thought they had hijacked Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo transfer, only for Chelsea to better their offer. The same thing then happened with Southampton wonderkid Romeo Lavia.

The sale of Fabinho to Al-Ittihad, though certainly lucrative for Liverpool from a business perspective, has left a gaping hole at the base of Klopp’s midfield, leaving the German and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke scrambling for options with less than two weeks to go in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s shortlist

On Monday, news broke that Liverpool were among the European giants vying for Ibrahim Sangare’s signature. This was revealed by former Manchester City man Kiki Musampa who is the brother of Sangare’s agent.

PSG and Bayern are also in the race to sign the PSV star and the Bavarians could look to the Ivorian to replace a man who is now again being targeted by Liverpool: Ryan Gravenberch.

The Reds’ interest in the Dutchman grew cold after strong links following Jude Bellingham’s move to Real Madrid, but Footmercato claims now that Liverpool are back in for the rarely-utilised Bayern youngster.

Moreover, The Independent reports that Crystal Palace midfielder Cheick Doucoure is also being targeted by the Anfield club. Doucoure and Sangare would certainly be cheaper options than Caicedo and Lavia – Sangare has a €37.5 million release clause – but their clubs may try to force Liverpool to pay over the odds knowing their desperation.
