Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was caught cold in his press conference following Friday’s 3-0 Premier League victory over Luton Town, as he appeared not to know who either Malang Sarr or goalkeeper Jamie Cumming are.

It was the first triumph of the Pochettino era and came about thanks to a couple of goals from the impressive Raheem Sterling and another strike from Nicolas Jackson, who the manager later claimed could become one of the best strikers in Premier League history.

The Argentine was also quizzed about players who could potentially leave the club, and while the subject of Romelu Lukaku did not come up, he might have welcomed it given that he appeared to be perplexed when quizzed about Chelsea fringe players Sarr and Cumming.

“I’m not going to ask about Romelu Lukaku but I’m going to ask about two players who have disappeared,” a journalist began in the press conference.

“Malang Sarr, who was on loan last season.”

At this point, Pochettino interjected: “Who?”

The reporter continued: “Malang Sarr. And what’s happened to Jamie Cumming, who played the first game against Wrexham?”

Pochettino looked surprised by the question before replying: “Oh my. Malang Sarr and then Jamie, yeah.

“I don’t know what I can tell you. I don’t know because you surprise me. It’s like a you’ve punched me and I am like this.”

He imitated being punched on the nose and then acted dazed and added: “We were talking about Luton!”

Pochettino is unlikely to have either player in his plans, with Sarr having failed to make a significant impression on the first team since arriving from Nice in 2020 and having a string of centre-backs ahead of him in the pecking order, while Chelsea have admitted that they are already looking for additional goalkeeping options to support Robert Sanchez.
