Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea will take the next step in their project this weekend with the arrival of Brazilian wonderkid Deivid Washington from Santos.

The Blues’ project has been built around signing promising young talent on long-term contracts, with no fewer than seven players joining the senior squad so far this summer, including Santos attacker Angelo, who joined for a €15 million fee.

Romano reports that Chelsea are set to plunder the Brazilian club once again, but this time for an 18-year-old who has scored two goals in nine Serie A matches for Santos this season.

Taking to YouTube, he said: “Chelsea are set to close the deal for Deivid Washington, who is a striker., during the weekend. They’re waiting for Santos to give the final green light but, verbally, everything is already in place between Chelsea and Santos.

“It will be €15 million plus €5m in addons. It will be a €20m package.

“Chelsea have already paid €15m to Santos this summer for Angelo Gabriel, who is doing very well, but from what I’m told is still expected to join Strasbourg [on loan] and the same is expected to happen for Washington. He will join Chelsea and move to Strasbourg on loan.”

How good is Deivid Washington?

Deivid, as he is known in Brazil, has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €5.8m but Chelsea have moved early for a teenager who has had little exposure to first-team football, having been convinced by his displays for the Santos first team thus far.

The teenager is a penalty-box finisher, the type that Chelsea lacked last season. He is the type of No.9 who has come back into fashion over the past couple of years, showing a keen eye for finding space in the box and a coolness to finish opportunities when they come his way.

Chelsea will hope that Deivid can get first-team opportunities at Strasbourg, where top scorer last term Habib Diallo could still leave the club, providing a pathway to game time.
