David de Gea’s deficiencies could derail Manchester United’s top-four bid – and the veteran Spaniard’s recent howlers have sparked fresh speculation that there will be a new face between the sticks at Old Trafford next season.

One name touted as a potential successor – or at least competitor – to De Gea is Borussia Dortmund number one Gregor Kobel.

Man Utd are said to be weighing up a move for the 25-year-old Swiss international, who our Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) model rates at €28.8m.

How good is Kobel?

Kobel joined Dortmund from Stuttgart in the summer of 2021 for €15m and immediately became first-choice in goal, keeping eight clean sheets in 29 Bundesliga appearances across his first campaign with the Black and Yellows.

Helped out by a less porous defence this time around, he’s recorded 10 Bundesliga shutouts in 2022/23 – the joint second-most in the German top flight.

Having represented Switerzland from U17 to U21 level, Kobel made his senior international debut in 2021; he featured at a major tournament for the first time last year, playing in his country’s 3-2 World Cup group-stage win over Serbia.

What clubs are interested in Kobel

Dortmund are reportedly keen to offer Kobel a new deal, with multiple clubs rumoured to be chasing his signature.

One of Man Utd’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea, are among those who have been linked with the former Hoffenheim youngster.
