However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that he has no information on Chelsea planning to sign Cancelo either in the summer or in the previous January transfer window.

What did Romano say about Cancelo?

“Joao Cancelo has played three or four games for Bayern now,” Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside column.

“In my opinion, it’s mad to get the rumours around now.

“Too early, people should let him play for Bayern.

“Chelsea were not in talks for Cancelo in January when he was available and at the moment from what I understand, there’s nothing more than speculation.”

Cancelo completed a loan move in January to Bayern, who have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer for €70 million.

The Portuguese international had requested to leave Man City this window after losing his first-team place at Man City and having a rumoured falling-out with manager Pep Guardiola.

Cancelo has started well at Bayern, with two assists in his first four games.

However, a permanent transfer to Bayern will not be easy to achieve, unless the €70m fee is lowered significantly.

This has opened the door for richer clubs such as Chelsea, who have spent a world record amount on transfers in 2022-23.

Chelsea are next in action on Wednesday in the Champions League when they play Bayern’s Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.
