Dutch legend Sneijder STUNNED by Man Utd's Weghorst pursuit

Dutch football legend Wesley Sneijder can't believe Manchester United are set to sign Burnley striker Wout Weghorst to fix their centre-forward issues.

Sneijder, who played 134 times for his nation during an illustrious career, is perplexed by the deal, which is set to be completed before the end of the January transfer window, and believes that the Red Devils' interest in Weghorst "can't be true."

It's understood that Weghorst is set to complete his medical at Old Trafford very soon, with the deal expected to be done in the coming days.

Weghorst spent the first-half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas, but remains a Burnley player after joining the Clarets in January 2022.

The 30-year-old has netted eight goals and contributed four assists in 16 league appearances for Besiktas this term as they sit fifth in the top flight of Turkish football.

Weghorst is set to join Erik ten Hag's side on a six-month loan deal as they look to add depth to their forward line following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo's contract before the 2022 World Cup began.

Sneijder can't believe Weghorst is set to join Man Utd

The former Inter Milan star refuses to believe that Man Utd are seriously set to land his fellow Dutchman as he is unconvinced Weghorst has the quality to play for the club.

As reported by VP, Sneijder said: "I think they've seen the trick with the free kick [in the World Cup against Argentina], so they don't fall for that in England anymore.

"In terms of striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I don't think so.

"They still have 300 of those in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. This really can't be true."

Despite widespread belief that Ten Hag prefers a 'false-nine' to play through the middle, he has regularly used a more traditional number nine during his managerial career, which explains the pursuit of Weghorst. Sebastian Haller is one such example of a big-man being utilised to exceptional effect by Ten Hag; something the former Ajax head coach will be hoping to replicate with Weghorst.

Weghorst scored just twice in 20 Premier League appearances for Burnley in the 2021/22 campaign, but netted an impressive 53 goals in 100 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg before moving to Turf Moor.
