Arsenal have been in the market for a new midfielder to further bolster their squad in the January transfer window ahead of the second half of the season.

The Gunners targeted one in the summer and were keen on a move for Douglas Luiz but were unable to get a deal for him over the line.

Now, they have eyes on two players: Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans, who is out of contract soon, and Palmeiras’ defensive midfielder, Danilo.

However, a move may not be that easy as they will face competition from another European giant, Barcelona, who are also keeping tabs on them.

Arsenal and Barcelona set to battle

According to 90 Min, Arsenal are set to push ahead for both players in the January transfer window in a bid to sustain their Premier League title challenge.

The Gunners will go into the World Cup break on top of the Premier League and want to sustain that form in the second half of the year.

Mikel Arteta spoke about his squad earlier in the week: “We know where we are and we knew the moment we had certain injuries that the squad is already very, very short."

Now, with Arsenal committed to backing him and the team, they are set to make moves and may pay a fee for Tielemans, despite being able to land him on a free if they wait.

Barcelona are keeping an eye on both situations, especially that of Tielemans, as they are looking for more free transfers in a bid to improve their own team.

As for Danilo, he was linked to Barcelona in the summer and they’re looking for Sergio Busquets’ successor, but Arsenal may be ahead in the race for the 21-year-old.

Edu, Arsenal’s Technical Director, identified him as a possible signing for the future and may decide to push ahead for him in the summer.
