Manchester United are in the market for a new goalkeeper, and have targeted Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp to provide competition to David de Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper hasn’t had a good start to the season, and has often been criticized for his failure to command the box and provide adequate support with the ball at his feet.

De Gea had a disastrous performance against Brentford in Manchester United’s second game of the season, and that led to calls for him to either be dropped or replaced entirely.

The Red Devils have looked at a host of goalkeepers in that time, including Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer, who has also been targeted in recent times.

Trapp responds to Man Utd interest

Trapp, though, is now seen as the primary goalkeeper target and United could make a bid before deadline day in order to get him into the side as soon as possible.

He too was asked about Erik ten Hag’s interest in him, and described it as “nice feedback”, when he was speaking at Sport Bild’s Awards ceremony on Monday evening.

Trapp was part of the Eintracht side that won the Europa League at the end of last season as they beat Rangers in the final, giving them the chance to play in the Champions League in the upcoming campaign.

The club are reluctant to lose their best players, especially this late in the window, having already lost Filip Kostic earlier in the summer as the Serb went to Juventus.

His coach, Oliver Glasner, also spoke about the interest in the player: “Anything is possible, I'm not worried, but I have often not worried - and then the player was gone. Like with Filip Kostic.”

Manchester United are looking for a short-term option to rotate with De Gea, as the Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of the season and they also have the younger Dean Henderson out on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The addition of Trapp, or any other goalkeeper, would add more pressure to De Gea’s place and bring in a player that is capable of playing with their feet as well as play within Ten Hag’s system.
