Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of leaving Manchester United have taken another blow with the news that Sporting CP have major reservations over signing the Portugal star.

It was thought that a move back to his formative club might be the last option for Ronaldo this summer given that he still feels he has more to give in a major league.

The Athletic, however, reports that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been in contact with the Primeira Liga outfit over a possible deal.

Sporting, after all, tick several key boxes in terms of what Ronaldo is thought to want from a club. Firstly, they will be challenging for major trophies domestically and, secondly, they will play in the Champions League group stages. Furthermore, there is the obvious emotional attachment that the player has with the team.

Any prospect of a move back to Lisbon, though, is complicated, the report adds.

Although Ronaldo is willing to cut his wages by up to 30% to facilitate a transfer, he is still likely to demand figures that are unprecedented in Sporting’s history. Allied to that, it is stated that head coach Ruben Amorim is concerned that the Manchester United player would alter the dynamic of his team in an unhealthy manner.

Despite the apparent knockback from Sporting, Ronaldo is still intent on leaving Man Utd. He has told new manager Erik ten Hag that it is his desire to depart the club.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils continue to insist that they are planning with Ronaldo for the season ahead.

Major clubs around Europe have continued to distance themselves from a transfer. Atletico Madrid have been most closely associated with a deal but have said it is “practically impossible” while facing major opposition from sections of their fanbase.

Ronaldo seems stuck at Man Utd for now, but the probability is that more options will present themselves before the end of the summer transfer window.
