Football director John Murtough was talking to supporters at the club's fan forum and described Ten Hag as being the candidate 2most closely aligned with the United's identity and aims".

As well as articulating his "clear vision for long-term success", Ten Hag's "attractive, attacking style of play" and commitment to youth were among the reasons he was described as the "standout candidate" during interviews.

What else did Man Utd reveal at their fans' forum?

United officials spoke of the need for "significant improvement after a very disappointing season" where 'standards and expectations were not met'.

However, the club are confident of progress and highlighted the early appointment of Ten Hag which they say has provided clarity and confidence for next season and beyond.

Murtough spoke of the former Ajax's boss passion and enthusiasm for the challenge during the hiring process and called Ten Hag a "proven winner" who is experienced but also "on an upward curve" in his career.

The club also praised Ten Hag's ability to improve players, which they feel will help maximise the "huge potential" of the current squad and the academy talent coming through the ranks.

Murtough also told fans that Ten Hag would be a key voice in the club's recruitment this summer together with the recruitment and scouting department, of which changes are ongoing.

The planning for a major improvement of United's training facilities was also announced as the club stressed the need for patience and support from fans during the long-term process.
