Liverpool are still sweating over the future of superstar forward Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian has proved to be one of the best signings in the history of the club since his €43 million transfer from Roma in the summer of 2017.

His goals have helped transform the Reds into one of Europe's elite again, as in his time at the club they have won the Champions League as well as their first ever Premier League title.

However, despite his brilliance, his future is far from certain at Anfield as his current contract expires in the summer of 2023.

That may seem far away at the moment, but the reality is that if Liverpool wish to receive a significant transfer fee for Salah, they will likely need to accept bids as early as this summer or risk losing him for free a year later.

The player has said previously that it is his intention to remain at the club, though reports emerged at the turn of the year that he is looking to become the highest paid player in the club's history.

Judging by his recent comments, too, negotiations haven't advanced to a high degree either.

What did Salah say about his contract?

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said:

"Not much, but honestly what I can I say? There are many things people don't know about.

"I can't be selfish now and talk about my situation. We are in the most important period for the team so I have to just talk about the team, focus on what's coming for the team and that's the most important thing.

"That's all I can say. Hopefully we can be optimistic and see what's going to happen."

When asked if he believed a deal would materialise, he was unsure.

"I can't say yes and I can't say no," he said.

"I've said many times before that's what I want. But again I can't really go deep in the contract right now because it's a really sensitive situation. For the team to win I can't just go on the news and talk about my contract. I just focus on the team and that's it."
