Manchester United could sign Bono from Sevilla to compete with De Gea
Manchester United may have to shake up their goalkeeping unit this summer, with Dean Henderson expected to move away from the club in search of more playing time. That will leave the Red Devils looking for somebody to come in and compete with David de Gea and they might turn to Sevilla shot-stopper Bono.
The Morocco international has been playing for Sevilla since 2019 and has grown and grown as a goalkeeper, currently impressive for the second-placed team in LaLiga Santander and in with a good chance of winning this year’s Zamora Trophy.
Although he is currently on a contract that runs until 2024, his release clause is only 30m euros and Sevilla may be willing to negotiate that down a little as long as they still receive a sizable fee. With another starting calibre goalkeeper already at the Spanish club, in the form of Marko Dmitrovic, Monchi could be ready to cash in if Manchester United come calling.
According to the Daily Mirror, that could be the plan to replace Henderson. Directors at Old Trafford have been impressed by Bono and they know first hand how good he can be, from the 2019/20 Europa League semi-final.
De Gea’s praise for Bono
After that Europa League meeting, which Sevilla won 2-1 in the coronavirus bubble, De Gea spoke about his counterpart and was very impressed. The Spaniard said: “Bono played a great game, making two or three really good saves. He earned his team this victory. Maybe we could have taken some chances, but Sevilla are a good team and have a great coach. I wish them all the best for the final.”
Sevilla and Bono went on to win that final against Inter Milan and now, a couple of years later, Bono and De Gea may be reunited, but this time on the training pitches at Carrington.
