Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp has been impressive in its own right but what makes it even more remarkable is the manner in which the Anfield side have achieved success on a tight budget.

Although Liverpool have spent big when necessary, their transfer and wage budget is some way short of their Premier League rivals.

This is undoubtedly evident from the manner in which the club kept their powder dry in the summer transfer window and are unlikely to spend much in this January window.

However, according to some new reports in England, Liverpool could be set to have a truly ambitious transfer period ahead of next season. Which could end up scuppering the plans of their biggest rivals.

An upgrade in defence

The first of Liverpool’s two-part strategy is to upgrade their options in defence. And to do that, Klopp's backroom staff have apparently targeted Seville defender and Chelsea transfer target Jules Kounde.

The French defender was on the verge of making the move to Stamford Bridge last summer, but Chelsea eventually cancelled the deal after refusing to pay Kounde’s release clause.

However, according to El Nacional, Liverpool have pulled together the funds to fork over €90 million for the central defender - who would be a notable upgrade on most of the club’s defensive options and a possible long-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk.

Midfield reinforcements heading to Anfield

After securing some defensive talent, Liverpool will apparently go all out to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice in the summer window.

The Anfield side have been in need of another box-to-box talent since Gini Wijnaldum departed for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and apparently Liverpool are neck-and-neck with Chelsea - but ahead of Manchester United - in their pursuit of Rice.

According to the Sun, the England international’s asking price currently stands at no less than €120 million - which would be a transfer record for Liverpool but also perhaps exactly what the club have been saving their money on for some time now.
