Arsenal? Man Utd? Chelsea? Which team will win the €92m transfer race for Morgan Rogers?
The future of Morgan Rogers is emerging as one of the biggest stories of the transfer window, with virtually every major Premier League side desperate to sign the Aston Villa star this summer.
Rogers has established himself as one of the standout performers in the Premier League since joining Villa for just €9.4 million in 2024 and the 23-year-old’s profile could grow even further this summer after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Despite Rogers penning a new contract with Villa in November that ties him to the club until 2031 and contains no release clause, The Athletic report that there is an ‘expectation’ that the attacking midfielder will leave Unai Emery’s side in the coming months.
The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all held a long-standing interest in Rogers and Villa’s tight financial constraints has led to reports that they would reluctantly consider his departure for a fee in excess of £80m (€92m.)
Rogers is not believed to be agitating for a move, while Villa would much prefer to sell other players before considering the departure of their star man, but there is said to be a growing belief that this summer is the right time for a move to extract the most value for all parties.
There have been no in-depth conversations or leanings towards Rogers’ preferred destination and his representatives have not negotiated personal terms with any club, but the player is open to a move and FootballTransfers explores which team could end up winning one of the most high-profile sweepstakes this summer.
Morgan Rogers: What does the future hold for Aston Villa’s in-demand star?
Rogers netted ten goals and provided seven assists last season while, crucially, only missing one Premier League match – a rare feat in this day and age, particularly while also making 15 appearances in European competition and being known for his work rate.
The England star was utilised in virtually every attacking role under Emery, from both wings and even as a striker due to his 6 foot 2 inch frame, however Rogers has thrived mostly as a number ten or coming in off the left.
It is Rogers’ versatility and physical capabilities that stands out to most teams, while his strong technical foundations come partially from having spent time in Manchester City’s academy as a youngster.
City are among the sides that have kept a close eye on Rogers but it is unlikely that they will emerge as a front runner to sign their former talent, with the club prioritising midfielders first and foremost this summer.
Some of Rogers’ former staff members could also play a part in his future, with Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox having worked with the player at City, while Michael Carrick also managed the forward at Middlesbrough.
United would love to sign Rogers but their question is one of finances, with the majority of their budget set to be allocated towards midfielders such as Ederson, who has agreed to move to Old Trafford from Atalanta for €35m.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will also hope that Joe Shields’ strong relationship with Rogers could help them gain the edge, with the Blues director also working with the Villa man at Man City.
The West London side have been among the leading pursuers of Rogers in recent times, having tried to sign him last summer, and the club see him as a perfect mould of player that suits their youthful side while also having the experience and pedigree to become a leader in their squad.
Rogers has also previously admitted he sees Cole Palmer as one of his closest friends and Chelsea believe their absence from Europe next season is unlikely to provide a stumbling block in any deal.
However, Rogers’ strongest suitors could be Arsenal, with FootballTransfers being told last month that the Gunners have already conducted extensive groundwork over a deal, although much will depend on their other business this summer.
The Premier League champions have asked to be kept informed with Rogers’ situation while they look to raise funds by selling players such as Gabriel Jesus and potentially Ethan Nwaneri, whose status as an academy graduate could provide the financial boost needed to afford the Villa star.
Verdict: All eyes on Arsenal
Rogers’ future is unlikely to be resolved until after the World Cup, by which time Arsenal will hope to have a clearer idea on the amount they can spend on a marquee signing.
Mikel Arteta’s desire to add a player in Rogers’ mould to his attacking contingent will certainly appeal to the youngster, who knows a move to North London may represent the best sporting decision given the progress made by Arsenal last season.
Arsenal are also keen on adding another goalscorer such as Eli Kroupi or Julian Alvarez, both of whom would also cost close to €100m, and they would be unlikely to afford a deal without first selling someone like Nwaneri.
However, with United and Chelsea facing similar concerns, the situation is expected to drag on throughout the summer and there could be even more twists following the World Cup.
Rogers remaining with Villa cannot also be ruled out but ultimately, Arsenal may prove to have the strongest case to win the race for one of the most coveted players on the market if they can strike a favourable deal in the coming months.
