Milan send message to PSG with Donnarumma expected to extend contract

AC Milan have sent their clearest message yet that they expect Gianluigi Donnarumma to commit his future to the club by signing a new contract.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper’s current deal expires at the end of the current season and he will be able to negotiate a Bosman transfer from January.

Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites to sign the Italy international should he leave San Siro, with transfer chief Leonardo a huge fan of the 6ft 5in shot-stopper.

However, the consensus in Italy is that Donnarumma is expected to soon extend his Milan contract, and the club’s CEO Ivan Gazidis has expressed just how important he is to the club.

“We recognise the talent to play modern football in our young players, their character and personality should not be underestimated,” Gazidis told DAZN.

“Think of [Alessio] Romagnoli and Donnarumma, they have leadership and experience despite the age. There are many leaders here, It’s a unique trait.”

Milan are currently enjoying an outstanding season and are top of Serie A, with Donnarumma one of the standout goalkeepers in the division.

He currently earns €6 million a year, and the belief is that he will pen a new deal earning a similar or slightly higher wage with bonuses.
