Rangers have completed the signing of Ben Godfrey from Atalanta on a season-long loan, with an option to sign him permanently next summer.

Godfrey joined Atalanta in 2024 from Everton for €12.5 million but the 28-year-old’s time in Italy has been disappointing, having made just one Serie A appearance in his debut season for the club before being loaned out ever since.

The defender will now play in Scotland next season after Rangers confirmed his signing on Monday, with the former Everton man being handed the number four jersey.

“I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” Godfrey said.

“I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”

Godfrey becomes Rangers' latest summer signing under new manager Derek McInees after the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie as the Glasgow side look to build a squad capable of winning the Scottish Premiership next season.

Godfrey looking to reignite career with Rangers after disastrous Italian job

Godfrey began his career at boyhood club York before joining Norwich where he went onto make 78 appearances, including 30 in the Premier League.

His performances at Norwich earned him a €27.5m move to Everton where he was a regular feature and even earned two England caps in 2021 under Gareth Southgate, during a season where he was named the Toffees’ young player of the season.

Things have not gone to plan since Godrey’s move to Italy, however, and he made just five appearances in all competitions for Atalanta before being loaned out to Ipswich in 2024.

Godfrey struggled for game time with Ipswich, only featuring in three matches as they were relegated from the Premier League and he had a similarly poor experience at Sheffield United in the Championship the following year.

Danish side Brondby eventually took Godfrey on loan in January and he made 12 appearances for the club but he has now joined Rangers with the idea of rebuilding his career in Scotland as he enters the final two years of his contract with Atalanta.
