Celtic have been handed a major boost in their bid to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson before the end of the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international completed a season-long loan move to Serie A giants AS Roma in July, however he has struggled since his arrival in Italy and rumours have suggested that Gian Piero Gasperini’s side may opt to terminate the deal this month.

Ferguson has only scored five goals in 21 matches across all competitions so far this campaign, including a brace versus Celtic in the Europa League, and Roma’s January transfer business has added further fuel to speculation of a winter exit.

The Italian outfit have signed Donyell Malen on loan from Aston Villa with an option to buy, while they have also purchased 18-year-old striker Robinio Vaz on a permanent deal from Olympique Marseille for €22 million.

As a result, Ferguson is expected to fall down the pecking order at the Stadio Olimpico over the next few weeks and his loan spell at Roma could be ended before Transfer Deadline Day on 2 February, as per The Daily Telegraph’s Mike McGrath.

He posted on X: “AS Roma look for Evan Ferguson solution after striker arrivals (Malen/Vaz). The 21-year-old has interest in Premier League + Europe, among them Fulham [who are] long-term admirers.”

Evan Ferguson to Celtic?

In addition to Fulham, Celtic are also interested in signing Ferguson amid their desperate pursuit of a new centre forward before the winter window closes.

Proposed moves for both Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum Wilson have fallen through, while Martin O’Neill’s side face competition for David Datro Fofana, Kieron Bowie and Franko Kovacevic.

Ferguson is also on the club’s radar and they have been linked with a move for the Republic of Ireland star for several months amid his woes at Roma.

A deal may be difficult to finalise, although it seems unlikely that he will be reintegrated into the Brighton first-team if Roma cancel his loan agreement this month. As a result, a move to Celtic could potentially be on the cards.
