Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have reached a full agreement to sign Argentina international midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.

Romano has said that the deal is “100% confirmed” and will be announced imminently.

Barco, a tigerish presence in midfield, will join Chelsea as an alternative option to Enzo Fernandez in the heart of the field.

Barco completes long-awaited Chelsea move

Romano has confirmed that the World Cup runner-up will be moving to Stamford Bridge this summer in the latest deal between the two BlueCo clubs.

Barco will follow Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha to West London, where he will also hook up with Racing team-mates Mike Penders, Aaron Anselmino and David Datro Fofana, who spent last season on loan in France with varying degrees of success.

While no transfer fee has been disclosed, Barco, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €27.8 million, will sign a long-term contract with Chelsea.

The deal comes as little surprise, with the former Brighton player having long been linked with a move to the London side and had already announced his departure from Strasbourg at the end of the Ligue 1 season.

He said: “Today, I announce my departure from this club, which I joined with high hopes. In a year and a half, I've had some wonderful moments, especially the most beautiful: the birth of my daughter [...] I will continue to support the club from afar. We will return as a family as soon as possible. Strasbourg will always hold a special place for us.”

Enzo Fernandez comparisons

Barco is a player who has been forged by Liam Rosenior, the former Strasbourg boss who went to Chelsea and had a brief period as manager before being sacked.

When he moved to France, he was recognised primarily as a left-back, yet Rosenior chose to harness his energy and competitiveness in a different role as a central midfielder.

He was one of the leading midfielders both in Ligue 1 and the Conference League last season, according to data analytics firm SciSports.

Comparisons will naturally be drawn with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who was a team-mate at the 2026 World Cup with Argentina. These are valid up to a point.

Both like to play deep in midfield, but while Enzo acts primarily as a box-to-box player, Barco has historically preferred to orchestrate play a little more from this area of the park.

There are similarities, meanwhile, in the attitude of the players. This was underlined with Barco’s controversial World Cup semi-final celebration after Enzo scored the equalising goal against England. He charged onto the field, much to the annoyance of Jude Bellingham, who gave him a clip to the back of the head after the game.

Former Strasbourg boss Gary O’Neil said of Barco in February:

“His enthusiasm is important to us. In training as in matches, he wants to win everything. He wants his team to give its best. He knows we're helping him find the right balance. What's the middle ground? Where's the limit? Where's the optimal level of commitment?

“I'm really happy with him. He's in excellent form. He's managed to find the right balance: he's motivated, but he knows how to control himself. He's on the right track, but we're obviously aware that we need to help him avoid excesses and problems in matches, because we need him for every game.”
