PSG would win 'tournament in wasting money' says La Liga boss

La Liga chief Javier Tebas has once again taken aim at Paris Saint-Germain, saying the Ligue 1 champions would 'win the championship' when it came to wasting money.

Tebas previously took aim at PSG, who are backed by Nasser Al-Khelaifi's Qatari Sports Investments, when Kylian Mbappe spurned Real Madrid to extend his stay in the French capital last year.

Mbappe's contract made him the highest paid player in world football before Cristiano Ronaldo's €200 million-a-year deal with Al-Nassr, and Tebas said PSG were "breaking the ecosystem of football."

La Liga impose strict financial restrictions on their clubs, and insisted Barcelona balance their books to the tune of €200m this summer if they wanted to defend their title this season. Ligue 1 have no such regulations - something Tebas has taken aim at once again.

Tebas: 'PSG lost €605 million!'

"In France, we know that PSG has lost €605 million, and that without financial engineering it would be much more," he said at an event organised by Gazzetta dello Sport. "PSG could win the championship if there was tournament in wasting money."

PSG have only got to one Champions League final in the 12 years since QSI first bought the club, falling in the quarter-finals or early in nine of the seasons since.

They broke the transfer world record to take Neymar to the Parc de Princes from Barcelona for €222m in 2017 - a move that plunged Barca into the financial difficulty they now find themselves in with the club overpaying in the scramble to find his replacement.

PSG have spent big again this summer, dropping a total of €350m on the likes of Randal Kolo Muani, Ousmane Dembele and Manuel Ugarte, but they find themselves third in Ligue 1 behind Monaco and Nice, and were recently beaten 4-1 in the Champions League.
