The 2021-22 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool will take place in Paris on Saturday 28 May, but preparations for next season’s competition have already begun.

Following an eventful final weekend of the season for the majority of European leagues, those involved in next year's Champions League can begin to focus on their ambitions in the competition.

Chelsea will lose their European crown once Carlo Ancelotti faces Jurgen Klopp at the Stade de France, but the Blues will have the chance to regain the title next campaign following confirmation of their qualification after Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on 16 May. The Gunners themselves missed out on qualification after Tottenham's win over Norwich on the final day of the Premier League season.

In Ligue 1, Monaco lost an automatic spot in the group stages after Ignatius Ganago's 96th minute equaliser for Lens on the last day of the season. That result meant Marseille leapfrogged Monaco into second place and gained an automatic place in the Champions League.

This season’s edition hasn’t yet been completed, but only one spot remains unfilled for the 2022-23 Champions League. 84 teams will take part across the play-off rounds and the actual competition itself, with the campaign kicking off with the preliminary play-off round on 21 June 2022.
