How Real Madrid will line up with Enzo Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez appears to be edging closer to a Chelsea exit, with the 25-year-old unhappy with the lack of progress made since his arrival from Benfica in January 2023.
The Argentina midfielder still has six years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, but rumours of an exit have intensified over the past few months and he has fuelled speculation that he could depart with his comments in recent weeks.
Fernandez has refused to confirm whether he will still be a Chelsea player next season, while he has dropped numerous hints suggesting that he would like to join Real Madrid during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Los Blancos are long-term admirers of the midfielder and they are expected to pursue a blockbuster deal this summer following their failure to sign a replacement for club legend Luka Modric last year.
It remains to be seen if Alvaro Arbeloa’s side are able to fund a deal for Fernandez, given Chelsea will likely demand a fee of at least €120 million, but a move to the Bernabeu is certainly on the cards, despite the recent emergence of academy wonderkid Thiago Pitarch.
If Fernandez does complete a bombshell transfer to Real Madrid this summer, how will he fit into Los Blancos’ starting XI?
How Real Madrid will line up with Enzo Fernandez
Thibaut Courtois remains one of the best goalkeepers in world football and he is widely expected to retain his place as Real Madrid’s number one in 2026-27.
In defence, Los Blancos still have a number of questions to answer and their preferred back four will largely rely upon the injury status of some of their key stars. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eder Militao, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras could establish themselves as the favoured quartet if they are given a run of games together.
If he remains in charge next season, Arbeloa will have a major selection headache in regards to Real Madrid’s midfield and attack as their recent upturn in form has coincided with the absence of Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo and Kylian Mbappe.
However, he would likely deploy Aurelien Tchouameni in a deep midfield role alongside Fernandez if the Chelsea star joins the club, with Bellingham slightly more advanced.
Federico Valverde has found form as a right midfielder in recent weeks and he could be used in that role again next season, especially given the defensive support he provides for Alexander-Arnold, while Vinicius Junior will provide flair on the left flank.
Mbappe will lead the line, with Arda Guler, Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo forced to accept back-up roles or potentially depart the club, especially if Nico Paz rejoins Los Blancos from Como.
