Real Madrid & Barcelona handed Nico Williams boost

Real Madrid and Barcelona’s hopes of signing Spain international Nico Williams have been handed a major boost after the Athletic Club star confirmed he has made a decision regarding his future.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of La Liga’s most exciting prospects over the past few years and he looks destined to leave Athletic Club on a free transfer next summer.

Williams’ current deal at the club is due to expire in 2024 and there is no indication he will sign a new deal.

Furthermore, the Spanish winger has added fuel to the fire regarding rumours of an exit with his recent comments.

Williams has admitted to Relevo, as per Fabrizio Romano: “The fact that great clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Premier League clubs want me means I'm doing things well.

“For me, it's clear what decision I want. My agents are working on it.”

In addition, Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, has confirmed that Athletic Club must adhere to his client’s wishes if he is to sign a new contract in the Basque Country.

He told El Correo:“There is no definitive offer from the club or the player, it would be the other way around, which is not the case either, it is the player who has to decide his future.

“The club knows what the player’s approach is, what he wants. There is no definitive offer and in a few months his contract will expire, so we must not forget that.

“This is a negotiation and there is an approach to the future on both sides. They must listen to the player.”

Williams has made 10 La Liga appearances for Athletic Club this season, scoring one goal and providing five assists.

According to 90min, Real Madrid and Barcelona aren’t the only club interested in the Spaniard.

They have reported that Aston Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all admirers of Williams and have been regularly checking his situation in Spain.
