Barcelona have utilised the free transfer market extensively in recent seasons.

Indeed they have snapped up a number of Man City stars on free transfers, including Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.

Gundogan is not the only Man City star who could join City this summer.

Barcelona target Cancelo

Sport also reports that Barcelona are in negotiations with Joao Cancelo’s agent Jorge Mendes, who was in the Catalan city this past week.

Mendes is surplus to requirements at City, having been sent out on loan to Bayern Munich in January.

Bayern have no intention of signing Cancelo permanently in the summer, meaning City will have to find a new home for the Portuguese full-back.

Mendes is in talks to send Cancelo to Barcelona on loan for the 2023-24 season, with the option of making it permanent.

Barcelona coach Xavi is reported to be a big fan of Cancelo, who has starred previously for Juventus, Inter and Valencia.

Barca have made the signing of a new right-back a priority in the summer, with the role being a problem position this past campaign.

The Blaugrana are on the brink of winning La Liga and are likely to clinch the title in the next one or two matchdays.

However, the club are keen to make more of an impact in Europe after being eliminated in the group stages of the Champions League for two years in a row.

They also failed to go deep in the Europa League after dropping down into the lesser competition.
