Lionel Messi’s future is up for speculation with the Argentine star entering the final year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and interest in him from Barcelona.

The number 30 signed for the French champions back in 2021 on a two-year deal and he is into the second year of that contract, which doubts over whether he will extend with the club.

Barcelona have been interested in bringing Messi back to the Camp Nou, having had to let the player go last year due to their mounting financial issues.

Now that they’re in a slightly better short-term financial position, they have been exploring the possibility of bringing Messi back to Catalonia, with both Joan Laporta and Xavi open to the idea.

Messi to decide future soon

Messi himself hasn’t made any decisions on his future just yet and thinks it’s too soon to do so, with the Argentine ready to wait it out for a few months to see how things pan out.

He is currently focusing on his season with Paris Saint-Germain, with the French side having made an impressive start, and Messi himself looking to be more settled and closer to his best.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored three goals and provided seven assists in Ligue 1 so far this season and is forming a fine partnership with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

After that, he is looking ahead to the World Cup with Argentina entering the competition as one of the top favourites to win the whole competition after a fine few years for the national team.

Messi intends to explore his opportunities after the World Cup in 2023, with matters more settled and he will have two big options on his hand with Barcelona and PSG.

PSG want to renew the contract of one of their biggest stars beyond 2023 and are working on a proposal for that, but like Messi, are waiting for the end of the World Cup in December.
