Laporta mocks Real Madrid’s Galactico chaos as Barcelona’s transfer plans revealed
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shown his club’s hand before the January transfer window, explaining what the priorities for the Catalan giants will be while taking a dig at Real Madrid’s Galactico policy.
Hansi Flick’s side have managed to take advantage of the chaos at Real Madrid to climb to the top of La Liga after facing an early season deficit, but that does not necessarily mean they will not seek to strengthen their squad next month.
Barca’s financial problems are well known, however, and Laporta has admitted that any signings that are made will have to be carefully considered. Indeed, the priority of the Camp Nou side will be to seek internal solutions to any issues the Blaugrana face.
Speaking at an event organised by La Vanguardia, the Barcelona president said: “[Sporting director] Deco is working and following the market. There may be opportunities, but Flick is currently retraining players: Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia…”
Real Madrid is a 'henhouse of egos', Joan Laporta claims
Laporta took clear aim at Real Madrid, where head coach Xabi Alonso is fighting to win over a dressing room of egos and struggling to give every player the pitch time they want.
“If we need to strengthen, we will. Barca have credit,” Laporta said.
“But our strength lies in the team, not in any one player, and having too many roosters in the henhouse. There are example… and we’re all thinking of the same ones.
“Barcelona can make any move that we want. But there’s no point in throwing money away. And Deco is working harder for June than January.”
Barcelona’s message is clear: there is the possibility of making signings in January if the need arises or if a golden opportunity presents itself, but the likelihood is that it will be a quiet market for Flick’s side.
