Barcelona have announced they have agreed a deal with Sevilla for the signing of Jules Kounde for a reported fee of €50 million, with a potential further €10m in add-ons.

The Catalan club have been looking to improve their defence, and have already signed Andreas Christensen on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract.

Manager Xavi was keen to bring in another new face ahead of the season, and Kounde was seen as the primary target for the summer window.

The two clubs have been in negotiations for a while, with Barcelona having already agreed personal terms with Kounde several weeks ago.

The deal will formally be completed once Kounde passes his medical and signs his contracts.

Barcelona beat off Chelsea interest to get Kounde

There was interest from Chelsea as well, and at one point it looked likely that the Frenchman was on his way to Stamford Bridge, but things have not panned out that way.

Barcelona had to weave through their financial difficulties to get this deal done, and they asked Kounde to be a bit more patient to get the deal done.

The defender obliged, as he saw Barcelona as his dream move, and he will now get the chance to play at the Camp Nou in the 2022-23 season once the formalities around his registration are complete.

Barcelona have been busy this summer, and Kounde is the latest to move to the Blaugrana after the aforementioned Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, Franck Kessie and Raphinha.

With that transfer, Barcelona have also spent the most money out of all clubs across Europe this summer as they look to complete on all fronts in the upcoming season.

Kounde joined Sevilla from Bordeaux in 2019 and has grown to become one of La Liga’s best defenders, forming a fine partnership with the now-departed Diego Carlos.

In total, he made 133 appearances for the club over three seasons, and was part of the team that won the Europa League in 2020.

He has also played 11 matches for France and was amongst the squad that participated at Euro 2020, as well as won the Nations League in 2021.
