Newcastle veteran close to leaving club as agents acquire mandate

Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius looks set to leave St James’ Park with his contract up in the summer.

The former Liverpool man will leave the Magpies, who are not prepared to offer him a new deal, it’s been reported.

The German has made two appearances for Newcastle since joining them on a free transfer in 2022, acting as a backup to Nick Pope, who’s out injured, and Martin Dubravka.

TuttoMercatoWeb state that the 30-year-old is considering making a switch to Italy in the summer and former Juventus midfielder turned agent Claudio Marchisio will be helping the player’s career in the future.

It’s reported that agent Alessandro Tocci’s firm ‘have the mandate’ to possibly bring the stopper to Serie A

Over the Christmas period, his partner Diletta Leotta stated that she’s hopeful the Newcastle goalkeeper can find a club in Italy, with it now thought that Karius would be open to a move there - though so far no clubs have been mentioned.

Indeed, it appears Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe opted against offering the former Reds keeper a new deal, as the club eagerly wait for the return of Pope, who’s faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

Karius featured for Newcastle last season in the club’s League Cup final against Manchester United. The Magpies fell to a 2-0 Wembley defeat but the keeper put in a solid display.

The German’s only other outing came away against Arsenal last month, with the club losing 4-1 to the Gunners.

Newcastle have endured a tough campaign and Howe is now set to overhaul his squad ahead of next season, with all eyes on the summer transfer window.

The side have been plagued by injuries while they were handed a huge task in Europe. Newcastle were pitted against AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage and ultimately failed to get out of their group and into the knockout stages of the competition.
