Luke Edwards of The Telegraph reports that manager Eddie Howe feels the Scotland international has the qualities to fit into his system.

McTominay has not made his mark under Erik ten Hag, being mainly used as a substitute, with the Dutchman using Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Fred instead.

Newcastle had been linked to the player in January but no move materialised and the club ended up not bringing in anyone.

The club know Ten Hag will need to raise money in player sales and they hope to take advantage of that.

The contingent of chief scout Steve Nickson, director of football Dan Ashworth and Howe all believe he would be a good fit for the club.

But supporters are not impressed with the idea of going for McTominay - and have been raging online overseeing his name linked once more.

McTominay as No.6

Despite the kickback from fans, Newcastle want McTominay as a deep-lying midfielder to allow Bruno Guimaraes to play in a more advanced role, with it thought that the Red Devils player has the desired attributes.

There is also the belief that he could still improve under Howe’s coaching and become a key asset to the side.
