Chelsea flop Werner set for transfer - where will he go next?

Chelsea striker Timo Werner looks set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer having fallen out of favour under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Werner has struggled over the course of his time in the Premier League since signing for €53 million nearly two years ago.

Although the Germany international has never looked entirely useless for Chelsea, he has only managed 19 goals and 16 assists for the club in 80 games to date.

And, the striker has found his game time limited at the club this season due to the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and the improvement of Kai Havertz, now forcing him to consider his options ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

So if Werner does decide to leave Chelsea this summer, where could he go?

Who will Werner sign for?

At the moment, the most likely buyers are Borussia Dortmund, who have held a long-term interest in Werner and would undoubtedly expect him to pick up where he left off in the Bundesliga.

Not only does Werner have a remarkable record in the German top flight - with 91 goals and 42 assists in 222 games for Stuttgart and RB Leipzig - he could also prove to be a viable replacement for Erling Haaland, should the striker depart this summer.

The only issue is that Dortmund appear to have significant interest in the younger, and cheaper Karim Adeyemi of RB Salzburg.

The German has also attracted reported interest from Bayern Munich, should Robert Lewandowski's time in Bavaria come to an end.

Now, Werner's poor goal record in west London would suggest that is a terrible idea. But if he is able to rediscover the form he showed in Leipzig, this could turn out to be a stroke of genius.

That said, for both Bundesliga clubs, the asking price could be an issue. As things currently stand, Werner is worth €55m - according to footballtransfers' player values.

This gives an outside chance to Manchester United, who have the finances to provide Werner with a second chance in English football.

Yet, the absence of Champions League football at Old Trafford next season could mean that the 26-year-old would rather stay put.
