NFL legend Mahomes joins Beckham in MLS ownership

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has joined the ownership group of MLS club Sporting Kansas City.

The Super Bowl champion (LIV) is one of a host of famous people to be a part of the league, including English football icon David Beckham - the owner of Inter Miami.

The 25-year-old was recently in attendance at SKC's Children's Mercy Park, where the U.S. men's national team played all three of its group games in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to join Kansas City's ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love," Mahomes said in a statement.

WHO IS PATRICK MAHOMES?

Patrick Mahomes isn't your average sportsperson, he's arguably the best quarterback in the NFL.

And for those that aren't fans of American football, that automatically puts him in the conversation for the best player in the entire league - given quarterback is by far the most important position.

In other words, this is a Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo calibre player.

And his latest contract is similar to that of footballs's superstars too, as he recently signed a 10-year-deal worth $450million - an NFL record by some margin.

Having sat out his first season in the league bar one game, common for young quarterbacks, he threw a franchise record 50 touchdowns in his second season, on his way to winning the regular season Most Valuable Player award.

Then, in just his second full season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, where he delivered a spectacular Super Bowl MVP-winning performance in a 20-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

So prior to the 2020 season, just his fourth in the NFL, Mahomes was already touted as the man to strip Tom Brady of his undisputed 'greatest of all time' title, but ended up losing to Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the next Super Bowl.

Evidently, this has made the SKC owner's quest to become the greatest significantly harder, with a heavy defeat to Brady on his resume, but with hopefully at least a decade of elite football yet to play, Mahomes' journey has only just begun.

Famous MLS owners

The Chiefs quarterback now adds to his on-field achievements by joining esteemed company in the list of famous MLS owners.

David Beckham co-owns Inter Miami and actor Matthew McConaughey is the co-owner of Austin FC.

Brooklyn Nets stars James Harden and Kevin Durant, as well as coach and former NBA MVP Steve Nash, own stakes in the Houston Dynamo, Philadelphia Union and Vancouver Whitecaps, respectively.

While Los Angeles FC's ownership group boasts names such as Magic Johnson and Will Ferrell.

Additionally, the Seattle Sounders are owned by one of Mahomes' rivals, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, and baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr.
