Salah urged to move to United States and become a MLS megastar like Messi
Mohamed Salah has been urged to move to Major League Soccer instead of the Saudi Pro League.
In the middle of March, Liverpool and the Egyptian himself confirmed that he will leave Anfield at the conclusion of the current season.
Salah announced his decision in a two-minute video on social media, while Liverpool confirmed his impending departure with the following statement: "Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season.
"The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.
"Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.
"Signed from AS Roma in the summer of 2017, the No.11 has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, helping the club to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as an FA Community Shield.
"His tally of 255 goals in 435 appearances to date has the Egyptian sitting third on the Reds’ all-time leading goalscorers chart, winning the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions in addition to a host of personal accolades.
"With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah is firmly focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool and, therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield."
Where will Salah go?
Speculation mounted as to where Salah might move to as he has been continually linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia, as well as Turkey and the United States.
One former Liverpool star reckons Salah should move to the MLS as he would become a "megastar" like Lionel Messi, who currently players for Inter Miami.
"Mohamed Salah to MLS or Saudi? It depends on which culture he wants to go to, but they will love him everywhere," Vladimir Smicer told BetVictor.
"I think in the US, for me, football is growing there. The stadiums are starting to fill. It's a good atmosphere. If I was in his position, I'd go to the US. But we'll see what he's going to decide. Maybe he can surprise us and he can stay in Europe. You never know. But in the US, he would be a megastar like Lionel Messi."
Salah was in dazzling form for Liverpool in 2024/25 as he recorded the highest amount of goal contributions in a single 38-game campaign since the beginning of the Premier League.
However, his output and performance level has dropped considerably in 2025/26 which has been a major contributing factor in his early departure from the Reds before the expiration of his contract, which runs until 2027.
