Inter Miami defeated New York City FC 5-1, with Messi creating the third goal by Mateo Silvetti to grab his 405th career assist and take over the alleged all-time record by Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas.

Argentine forward Tadeo Allende netted a hat-trick for Inter Miami, with Telasco Segovia also on the scoresheet, while Justin Haak scored New York’s only goal as they suffered a heavy loss.

The win sees Inter Miami crowned Eastern Conference champions and marking another trophy for Messi, although the major honour up for grabs will be the MLS Cup, which his side will now play on December 6 against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Messi is one game away from securing his first MLS title and the 13th league championship of his career and he will come up against Germany international Vancouver star Thomas Muller for the seventh time during the final.

“We have reached the final with a brotherhood of moving forward,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. “The power of one group can overcome many things.”

Messi becomes all-time assist maker ahead of MLS Cup final

Messi is also now widely recognised as the greatest assist maker of all-time, pushing ahead of Puskas and Pele, although the accuracy of such records is somewhat speculative due to the nature of tracking the statistics.

However, having provided more assists than any player since official tracking began, Messi’s new record of 405 is unlikely to be beaten again anytime soon.

Messi will now switch his attention to securing Inter Miami’s first ever MLS title before the season officially ends and he rests up ahead of the new campaign in February and the World Cup next summer.

“We still have one more step to go... Eastern Conference champs but we're down to the MLS Cup final,” Messi wrote on Instagram.
