Lionel Messi set to break all-time record after grabbing 400th career assist in Inter Miami win
Lionel Messi reached another legendary milestone on Saturday night with his 400th career assist in a dazzling display for Inter Miami in the MLS playoffs.
Inter Miami cruised to a 4-0 win over Nashville SC to complete a 2-1 series victory over their rivals and progress to the Eastern Conference semi-finals where they will face FC Cincinnati in a single match affair.
Messi continued to be the jewel in Miami’s crown by scoring twice as well and assisting the other two goals to bring up the landmark 400th assist of his glittering career.
The 38-year-old is now four assists away from breaking the all-time record, which is held by Hungarian and Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas.
Messi notched 16 assists during the regular MLS season – the second-most of any player – and the Argentine playmaker could feasibly break Puskas’ record before Inter Miami’s season ends if they continue to flourish in the playoffs.
Should Inter Miami defeat Cincinnati later this month, they will face either Philadelphia Union or New York City FC, with the eventual victors going on to play the Western Conference winners in the MLS Cup on December 6.
Messi: Winning 2022 World Cup was like my kids being born
Messi will also have an opportunity to add to his tally in the coming days when Argentina face Angola in a friendly ahead of their World Cup campaign next year.
Argentina will be hoping to defend their World Cup next summer, with the tournament set to be held across in the US, Canada and Mexico, and Messi spoke earlier this week, comparing winning his previous title to the birth of his children.
“With all due respect, because it has nothing to do with it, but when I won the World Cup at the professional level, I had the same feeling as when my children were born. It's a feeling that's hard to explain, it's so special and so big that anything I say falls short,” Messi said.
"The way the country celebrated showed how much we needed and wanted this to happen again after so long. For me, it was special; winning the World Cup is the ultimate. After the World Cup, you can't ask for anything more.
"I have very high expectations that the [2026] World Cup will be something extraordinary.”
