The 'Messi Cup' will take place Miami from 9-14 December, with the ultimate target of discovering a new generation of players who dream of following in the multiple Ballon d'Or winner's footsteps.

Messi announced the tournament on Instagram, writing:

"Thrilled to finally share this with you — this December, Miami will host a very special youth football tournament featuring some of the top clubs from around the world. The future of the game will be on full display, and it’s more than just matches — we’ve got an incredible few days planned with lots of other exciting activities. This is about the next generation. Hope you like it! This is the #MessiCup."

The official description of the tournament from the official website states:

"The Messi Cup is a new global youth football platform created in partnership with Lionel Messi. It brings together the world’s top U16 teams and players for a week of competition, cultural exchange, and immersive experiences in Miami. Beyond the matches, it includes a summit, fan experience, and entertainment programming."

The 2026 Messi Cup will feature eight under-16 teams: FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid, Manchester City, River Plate, Inter Milan, Newell’s Old Boys, Chelsea, and Inter Miami.

Naturally, Messi's beloved Barcelona and first club Newell's Old Boys feature - but there's no place for another former club Paris Saint-Germain.

Initial group stage fixtures will take place at Inter Miami's Florida Blue Training Center before knockout matches that will take place in Chase Stadium.

Each young side is guaranteed three matches in the group stage.

"The Messi Cup is where today’s game meets tomorrow’s players," said Tim Pastore, CEO of Messi's media company, 525 Rosario.

"It is an opportunity to celebrate talent, culture, and community, while creating legacies and bonds that will endure well beyond the pitch."
