Todd Boehly leaves Chelsea: A radical transfer strategy, an All-Star proposal and his controversial stint reviewed
Todd Boehly has officially left Chelsea. After weeks of negotiations, the American billionaire has been bought out by Clearlake Capital, and his spell in west London has come to a rather understated end.
For many, Boehly has been considered to be the driving force behind the bold decisions made at Stamford Bridge since the takeover in 2022. In reality, the American businessman has largely been a bystander in recent years, forced to watch on from the sidelines as Clearlake Capital chief Behdad Eghbali calls the shots.
Boehly, who held the role of Chairman at Chelsea, and Mark Walter have both sold their 12.8% stakes in the club and it’s understood that Clearlake Capital now own over 80% of the Blues, having spent more than £1 billion to buy Boehly and Walter out.
Clearlake, led by co-founders Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, have acquired full control at Chelsea, although it has been insisted that day-to-day operations will not change.
In an official statement posted on the club’s website, Boehly said: “It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the Club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.
“I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the Club. I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.”
Meanwhile, Eghbali and Feliciano added: “Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as Chairman. He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family.
“Clearlake has served as Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the Club’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the Club’s supporters.”
Todd Boehly’s Chelsea legacy
Boehly appointed himself as the club’s sporting director following the takeover in 2022, although he only held this position for the first transfer window of the new era at Stamford Bridge.
Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Slonina were signed for a combined €300 million, before Boehly relinquished control to Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who arrived as joint-sporting directors from Brighton & Hove Albion. Eghbali is also understood to have played a key role in transfer decisions from January 2023 onwards.
Boehly, meanwhile, began to play a background role, although he was consulted on all major decisions. He stepped back from the day-to-day running of the club following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2023 and it’s reported that he was opposed to Eghbali’s decision to sack the Argentine after just one season at the helm.
During Boehly’s time at Stamford Bridge, it’s hard to differentiate between decisions made jointly between the hierarchy and those led by Eghbali, but the American billionaire was certainly involved in how Chelsea changed the face of the Premier League transfer market.
The English top flight had established itself as the biggest, and richest, division in European football long before Boehly’s arrival, however he helped the Blues become the market-leaders of a player-trading model.
During Boehly’s time at the club, Chelsea signed 57 first-team players and sold 47. Meanwhile, they spent €2.12 billion on new signings and earned €1.37 billion through sales. Such a policy would previously have been regarded as taboo, and still is by many, but Chelsea have made it seem regular.
Chelsea were also the first club to prioritise signing young players on extremely long contracts, in order to amortise their transfer fee, and this is a policy that has since been adopted by a host of teams across England.
Their ability to find loopholes in financial regulations has been remarkably impressive and although this is unlikely to change following Boehly’s departure, he leaves having helped oversee a major shift in the Premier League transfer landscape.
He also leaves with his reputation amongst Chelsea fans fairly high.
While he was the vocal, outspoken public figure behind the takeover, who famously proposed a Premier League ‘All-Star’ match, Boehly has not had a direct influence on proceedings at Stamford Bridge in over three years.
He wasn’t the driving force behind the club’s incessant desire to ignore experience in favour of untapped potential, he wasn't responsible for the constant managerial churn, and, as a result, Clearlake have borne the brunt of criticism from fans in recent months.

With regards to what’s next for Chelsea, it looks like nothing much will change. Eghbali will continue to lead operations as usual, although he won’t have the presence of Boehly looking over his shoulder at the decisions being made.
As for Boehly, he continues to co-own the LA Dodgers, the LA Sparks and LA Lakers, and it remains to be seen if he will grace English football again in the future.
All in all, while he will be remembered as the face of BlueCo’s failed Chelsea project, Boehly’s influence was far smaller than most realise and it’ll be curious to follow the club’s progress over the coming months as Eghbali’s power reaches new heights.
