Liverpool have finally struck an agreement with PSG to sign Bradley Barcola in a record-breaking transfer.

Barcola will become Ligue 1’s most expensive export when he joins the Anfield club in a deal that is worth around €140 million, including bonuses. Liverpool will pay in the region of €120m by way of an upfront fee for the France winger.

The Reds have spent the summer hunting a new left winger for Andoni Iraola’s side, with the 23-year-old always towards the top of their list, particularly after it was clear a move for Yan Diomande would not be possible.

Barcola becomes the third most expensive player in Liverpool history, trailing only the bumper deals that saw the Reds sign Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak last summer.

Crucially, he was eager to move to Anfield after talks over a new deal at PSG stalled.

This opened the door to the transfer, with Luis Enrique’s side unwilling to retain any players not completely committed to the club.

It did not mean, however, that negotiations were simple. PSG initially set a €170m asking price for the player – a figure that was always considered to be unrealistic.

Liverpool managed to reduce this to an initial €120m, with €20m potentially following in bonus payments.

It is a hefty fee, but Barcola is a two-time Champions League winner and brings with him experience of a winning culture, as well as the type of explosiveness that Liverpool will love.

But how will he fit into Iraola’s plans?

How will Barcola fit in at Liverpool?

Barcola is a left winger and is, therefore, not a replacement for Mohamed Salah at Anfield. While he can play across the forward line, he rarely does. Iraola should, therefore, be expected to use him on the left.

The Spaniard, of course, is exclusively a 4-2-3-1 manager, so picking Barcola’s role in the team is not hard.

He will hook up with fellow €100m+ signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz at the forefront of the attack, notably shutting down the prospect of the German playing off the left in the process.

Liverpool’s options on the right, meanwhile, are not as extensive. Rio Ngumoha had a difficult match against Newcastle but will be in the thinking here, although Victor Munoz will hope to hold down that role after arriving from Osasuna this summer. The 23-year-old is another who has typically made his name down the left, so in reality, the Reds are working on a different solution for this role.

Elsewhere, big surprises are not expected. In particular, Milos Kerkez is installed as the first-choice left-back with Emmanuel Frimpong the sole senior option available on the right unless Iraola decides to give loan signing Ronald Araujo a go there.
