Exclusive: Arsenal close in on Bruno Guimaraes as Berta targets two priority deals
Arsenal are close to securing the transfer of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle in the first of two priority moves outlined by sporting director Andrea Berta, FootballTransfers can exclusively reveal.
The Gunners have been pursuing Brazil international midfielder Bruno for several weeks, with sources revealing that only the finishing touches need to be confirmed before the deal is complete.
The 28-year-old has made clear that he wants to move to the Emirates Stadium, and FootballTransfers sources have indicated that he will get his wish.
Arsenal’s financial juggling act
Bruno is one of the major transfer deals that Berta has pinpointed as being essential to Arsenal ahead of their defence of the Premier League title.
As well as the central midfielder, the sporting director of the North London side wants to sign a left-sided forward. Berta is not seeking an out-and-out winger, but instead someone to operate in that space who is capable of drifting inside in the mould of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Arsenal thinking has increasingly shifted towards the identity of this player.
Bruno will play a part in this deal, too. The Emirates side have been fighting to strike a balance on transfer fees, allowing them to snap up the former Lyon midfielder while also signing the calibre of player they believe they need for the left wing.
This was a major factor in the delay of their bid to Newcastle for Bruno, and indeed it is not yet clear how much they will pay for the all-action South American star.
Arsenal’s signing so far
Arsenal have so far been patient in the transfer market, with their only fee paid to secure the signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen on a full-time basis – a deal that was effectively programmed in last summer.
The Gunners have also snapped up Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds to act as backup to first-choice goalkeeper David Raya.
Bruno Guimaraes, therefore, promises to be the first major addition to Mikel Arteta’s ranks this summer as Berta prepares to pick up the pace in Arsenal’s preparations for the new season.
