Luka Vuskovic: Why Chelsea need to break the bank on Spurs wonderkid
Chelsea are interested in Tottenham wonderkid Luka Vuskovic - and for good reason.
The Blues are the latest club to be linked with the teenage centre-back, with CaughtOffside claiming that Chelsea are currently showing the strongest interest in poaching the 19-year-old.
The Stamford Bridge club have joined Barcelona and other European giants on the long list of Vuskovic's admirers as he continues to enhance his sparkling reputation in the Bundesliga.
The Spurs youngster - who has yet to play a competitive game for them due to his age - is currently on loan at Hamburger SV, and to say that he has been a transformative signing would be an understatement.
Vuskovic has been nothing short of sensational for the promoted Bundesliga side, both defensively and offensively as well. His five goals make him the most dangerous defender in the division.
Why Chelsea want Vuskovic
The Croatian has won plaudits for his exceptional performances this season, playing with an assuredness and swagger that belies his years. Germany legend Lothar Matthaus previously described him as "playing like he's been to three World Cups."
Of course, given his youth, Vuskovic has had learning experiences this season, too. He has made a couple of mistakes that have led to goals, but this is natural for a player who only turned 19 last month.
Thanks in no small part to Vuskovic, HSV are currently in a comfortable 12th place in the Bundesliga, six points clear of rivals St. Pauli in the relegation playoff spot.
This week, Vuskovic scored his first goal for the senior Croatia national team - in his third appearance and second start - in a 2-1 win over Colombia. Soon thereafter, he was named the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Month for the fourth time this season.
His rise to prominence has been rapid, and it is no surprise that Chelsea are interested. The Blues have made a habit of poaching the best young talent in the world and are surely regretting that they did not beat Spurs to his signature in 2023.
Rectifying this mistake will not be simple or cheap. Tottenham don't want to sell, but given where they currently are in the Premier League, the decision may be taken out of their hands. Vuskovic won't be playing in the Championship next season.
It is likely to take a fee in the region of €100 million to prise the teenager away from the North London club, but this may be a worthwhile investment for a club like Chelsea.
They desperately need defensive reinforcements, and a generational talent like Vuskovic could be a game-changer for Liam Rosenior's side. The data certainly backs up that Chelsea should throw the kitchen sink at the centre-back.
Analytics firm SciSports ranks Vuskovic among the world's best defensive prospects. Its SciSkill system, which is calculated based on the analysis of hundreds of data points, sees the 19-year-old rank fourth among U21 centre-backs in terms of potential.
Vuskovic is only bettered by Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona), Neil Pierre (Philadelphia Union) and fellow Chelsea target Karim Coulibaly (Werder Bremen). The Spurs star has a higher potential than Levi Colwill, meaning that he could become the Blues' best defender if he lives up to expectations.
That shows just what a remarkable talent Vuskovic is. If Tottenham end up getting relegated - and, to be honest, even if they don't - Chelsea should be all over the 19-year-old.
