Transfer Rumours: Arsenal handed Julian Alvarez boost as agreement confirmed
The January transfer window is nearly over and clubs across world football are therefore scrambling to finalise late deals before Deadline Day.
Below, FootballTransfers runs through the biggest rumours and gossip from 25 January, including the latest updates on Julian Alvarez and Mike Maignan.
Julian Alvarez to Arsenal boost
Arsenal have been handed a big boost by the agent of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, who has played down rumours of negotiations with Barcelona.
Despite a recent form slump, the Argentina international remains one of the best strikers in world football. Alvarez is on the radar of many European giants amid Atletico Madrid's struggles to compete with Barcelona and Real Madrid for silverware.
The 25-year-old opened the door to a potential summer transfer in late 2025, and speculation over his future has been rampant. Barcelona view him as the ideal long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, while Arsenal are also monitoring his situation.
Mike Maignan agreement
Mike Maignan has reached a “verbal agreement” over a new contract at AC Milan, ending speculation of a move to Chelsea in the process.
That is according to football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano, who posted on X: “AC Milan and Mike Maignan reach verbal agreement over new deal until June 2031!
“Formal steps to follow but deal in place for French GK who was out of contract in June 2026. Huge move for Milan with Maignan seen as key player.”
Liverpool submit Aurelien Tchouameni offer
Liverpool have reportedly submitted a €100 million offer for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as they look to bolster the first-team squad available to Arne Slot.
The Reds hierarchy are ready to dip back into the transfer market for reinforcements and they have lodged a €100m bid for Tchouameni, as per a report from Spanish publication Fichajes.
Tottenham Hotspur have also reportedly made a move for the France international, who has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at Real Madrid, although a move to Thomas Frank’s side seems highly unlikely following their signing of Conor Gallagher.
Oleksandr Zinchenko talks
Arsenal remain in talks with Oleksandr Zinchenko ahead of a possible permanent move to Eredivisie giants Ajax before the end of the January transfer window.
The Ukraine international is currently on loan at Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest, but negotiations over a mid-season exit are ongoing as Arsenal look to offload him before this summer.
As per Sky Sports, Zinchenko has already travelled to Amsterdam to undergo a medical ahead of his proposed move to the Netherlands. It’s understood that he will sign a six-month contract with Ajax, although the deal is currently on hold amid negotiations with Arsenal.
Xabi Alonso to replace Arne Slot Liverpool?
Liverpool have contacted Xabi Alonso amid rumours that he could be hired as a replacement for current head coach Arne Slot.
The Dutchman is under major pressure at Anfield and Liverpool officials have responded by contacting Alonso to gauge the possibility of whether he would be open to returning to the club, according to Spanish outlet AS
The Reds have reportedly received a positive response from Alonso following their approach, although the 44-year-old is unlikely to rush into a final decision.
