Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admits that the club is ready to upset fans during the January transfer window – but he insists it is for the long-term good of his team.

After spending more than €250 million in the summer, the Red Devils find themselves seventh in the Premier League having won only seven of their 17 games.

On Sunday, they went to Aston Villa and suffered a 2-1 loss, albeit with a heavily depleted squad.

Amorim was unable to call upon Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo because of AFCON while injuries prevented the likes of Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt from featuring.

To make matters worse, Kobbie Mainoo was officially ruled out with a knock sustained in training, while Bruno Fernandes went off at the break with a soft tissue concern.

With the squad stretched to the maximum, United were unable to leave Birmingham with a point, though Amorim insists that there will be no panic buys when the transfer window opens.

Ruben Amorim on Man Utd’s January plans: No panic signings

“What we cannot do is reach January and try to do everything in urgency and make mistakes,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“Then it is here we go again with mistakes. If we have to suffer, the club comes first.

“Of course, we need points. You can feel at this moment we are going to suffer.”

Man Utd already suffering

While Man Utd’s selection crisis is clearly emphasising their weaknesses, there is a clear need for Amorim’s squad to be improved.

The signings of Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the summer have had the desired impact of strengthening the Red Devils going forward, but they retain a soft underbelly that is being constantly exploited.

The 28 goals they have conceded this season cannot be explained by the recent injury problems, with only Bournemouth outside of the bottom five posting a worse defensive record. The Old Trafford side post just one clean sheet this season – a record that only Wolves do worse than.

Whether Man Utd invest in a defensive midfielder or a defender, it’s clear that Amorim’s side need help at the back.
